The Airports Authority of India is responsible for creating, upgrading and maintaining civil aviation infrastructure in India. They provide air transportation services to the country and are involved in other related tasks. The AAI owns and operates airports across India as well as manages airport concessions.
The AAI is responsible for the air traffic control and management system in India as well as for creating, maintaining and upgrading civil aviation infrastructure. They also provide Air Traffic Management services over Indian airspace and adjoining oceanic areas. It also manages a total of 125 airports, including 11 international airports, 8 customs airports, 81 domestic airports and 25 civil enclaves at military locations.
AIA has a wide coverage all over the country, from airports to Indian airspace. It has 7 radar stations and 29 VHF/DME stations for air traffic control, complemented by a ground-based VOR station and 700 NDB/DVOR station.
Most airports provide 52 runways with Instrument landing system installations and Night Landing Facilities. A total of 15 airfields have Automatic Message Switching System installations.
The Indian government is hoping to become the first country in the South East Asian region to implement ADSS. By implementing this technology with local solutions they are taking a stand against APEOATS or Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast Out capability, thus expediting launches of satellites from Indian soil.
AAI has four training establishments viz. The Civil Aviation Training College (CATC) at Allahabad, the National Institute of Aviation Management and Research (NIAMAR) at Delhi and Fire Training Centres (FTC) at Delhi & Kolkata.
The navigation systems for aircraft are complex and expensive pieces of equipment that require a great deal of time, effort and expertise to maintain. AAI is a part of India’s civil aviation market that is continuously expanding and developing. The company has set up highly automated calibration centers in Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and New Delhi for the Indian Air Force, Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard and others.
